Choosing an amplifier
A short guide to personal sound amplifiers — what they do, who they suit, and how to pick one.
A personal sound amplifier (sometimes called a hearing amplifier or PSAP) makes everyday sounds louder — conversations, the television, birdsong. It is not a medical hearing aid, but many people find one helpful for mild listening difficulties.
Who an amplifier suits
Amplifiers work well for occasional situations: watching TV without turning the volume up, following conversation in a quiet room, or listening outdoors. If you struggle to hear in most situations, a hearing test and a prescribed hearing aid may serve you better.
What to look for
Comfort first: a device you will actually wear beats a powerful one left in a drawer. Look for simple controls, a rechargeable battery, and a returns window long enough to try it at home — ours is 30 days from purchase.
